Learning to Drive?

APPLYING FOR A UK DRIVING LICENCE

Looking into getting your first provisional or full driving licence? Before your 1st driving lesson, Here’s everything you need to know.

Getting Your Provisional License: The First Step

Before you can start learning to drive, you’ll need a provisional license. It’s the first step on your journey to driving independence. You have two options for applying for a license: online at the GOV.UK website or in person by picking up a D1 application form at your local Post Office. This license allows you to practice driving in both manual and automatic vehicles, giving you the flexibility to choose what suits you best.

Apply Online for Your Provisional License

Applying for a license Online:

Quick and Easy

For a smooth application process, ensure you:

  • Are within 3 months of your 17th birthday to apply, though remember, you can only start driving on public roads from your 17th birthday.
  • Have a valid form of identification, such as a passport.
  • Are a resident of the UK, with a permanent address.
  • Can provide addresses for where you’ve lived over the last three years.
  • Meet the vision requirement, being able to read a new-style number plate from 20 metres away.
  • Do not have any legal barriers that prevent you from driving.
  • Can make the £34 application fee payment using a debit or credit card.

After applying for a license the DVLA typically sends out your provisional license within three weeks of receiving your application. However, be prepared for potential delays if they need to perform additional checks on your health or personal details. This waiting period is an excellent opportunity to start familiarising yourself with the Highway Code.
